A Story for Small Grandchildren: The Christmas Tree
By James J Henry Jr
Everybody has a story about a Christmas Tree. This is mine.
A long time ago there was a little boy who lived near the woods and has his own little ax. At Christmas time he decided that this year he would get the family Christmas Tree.
Where this little boy lived it was cold at Christmas time, and it also got dark early. He started into the woods and went farther in this time that he had ever gone before. He was looking for the perfect tree.
Soon it was starting to get dark, so he selected one and chopped it down. It was much bigger lying on the ground than it looked standing up straight, but this little boy was determined to take this tree home to his family. He dragged it through the woods for a very long way, and it took a very long time.
Even though it was very cold and the tree very heavy, he didn't mind. He was bringing home a Christmas tree for his family.
Finally he got to his house dragging this big tree and he met his father coming home from work at the same time. The little boy was very tired, but also very proud to have brought home this Christmas tree. The cold didn't seem to matter.
His father looked at him and then looked at the Christmas tree lying there. The little boy struggled picked up the Christmas tree and stood it up straight. He watched his father's face. It was not a perfect tree. They could buy one much better.
His father looked back at him and said, "Why don't you come with me, and we'll go buy a tree?"
The little boy had a strong urge to cry, but little boys then were taught not to cry, so he didn't. But somehow his father could tell, and very quickly said, "We will use this tree!"
Very many Christmases have happened since then and the little boy still remembers his Christmas tree, because it stood in his house all during the Christmas Season. But he really remembers his father the most, and will honor and love him forever.

Reading your story, I was afraid the little boy was going to get lost in the woods looking for his tree. Nice ending, true to the spirit of the season. Thank you for sharing your story.
