I am From
By Karen Zaun Kennedy who blogs at Sweetwater Lane
I am from hooked rugs,
from photographs, paintings, prints, and pottery.
I am from sunshine lining the walls and floors with ornate patterns
and snowflakes twinkling on the ceilings.
I am from water smoothed stones
and evergreens whose nests I share.
I am from cheesecake birthdays and hot tempers,
from Grammies and Grampas,
from ex-smokers and crafters,
from hunter gatherers.
I am from “If you don’t have something nice to say don’t say anything at all,”
and Ode to Joy, Fur Elise, and Canon.
I am from Vermont and England,
macaroni and cheese, corn chowder, and milky butter beans and potatoes.
I am from stray skunk babies and disappointment for things given up,
from Lightening and Mama Kitty and Lucy memories.
I am from walks in the woods and peaceful places.
I am from mementoes, boxed and binned,
and buried away for the future,
