Elder Interviews at Other Media

A few months ago, I traveled to Washington, D.C. for an interview about elderblogging on Retirement Living TV’s The Daily Apple show. Several other elderbloggers were featured on tape from their homes: Millie Garfield of My Mom’s Blog, Susan Harris of Takoma Gardener and Mort Reichek of Octogenarian.

Amongst the busy-ness of producing ten daily programs a week, the good folks at RLTV have been gradually adding past shows to their permanent online archive. So if you missed us the first time around, just click here to watch the Elderblogging episode on your computer. There are a lot of other past shows there you might enjoy too.

Right now, new RLTV programs can be viewed Monday through Friday in four ways:

  1. For Comcast Mid-Atlantic and New England cable subscribers, daily RLTV programs are broadcast from noon to 4PM ET Monday through Friday on Channel CN8
  2. DirecTV subscribers can see the same programs from 9AM to 5PM ET on Channel 364
  3. In Denver, Comcast Entertainment Television (CET) broadcasts Retirement Living TV from noon until 2PM
  4. If you have Windows Media Player, you can also watch the programs live on your computer from noon to 4PM ET on the Comcast website.

Retirement Living TV is working hard to expand the number of cable networks that carry their programming. You can help by joining the “I Want My RLTV!” campaign. Leave a message telling them where you live and what cable network you subscribe to. Or, if you’d rather do it later, click the “TV For Our Generation” badge on the right sidebar of TGB anytime.

If you haven’t done this yet, it is worth a couple of minutes of your time. RLTV is doing a terrific job of producing excellent, thoughtful and compelling television by, for and about elders. The more people who request coverage on their cable networks, the sooner it will show up in your town.

Growing Bolder Radio
Last week, I had a good time doing an interview with Growing Bolder Radio hosts Marc Middleton and Bill Shafer about elderblogging.

Chuck Nyren of Advertising to Baby Boomers beat me to the announcement by leaving a link to it in the comments on yesterday's post. Here it is again at the Growing Bolder website or if you live in Orlando, Florida, it will be broadcast tomorrow, Sunday, 6 May, at 4PM on WFLA 540AM, on at the same day and time in South Florida on WBZT 1230AM.

Blog Notes
amba of Ambivablog alerted me to a an excellent post from her 89-year-old father, Ancient Mariner, titled "Reserve Death For Gomers." And while you are surfing, amba herself posted this quote last month from Paul Theroux about old age.

If you missed reading Mick Brady's latest entry at The Elder Storytelling Place yesterday, it's still there and still worth a read - a beautifully written story of a childhood adventure on a cold, winter's night.

Wow. All I can say is Wow! I have a 80+ grandmother, who I consider to be very impressive. When my grandpa died, she signed up for internet lessons at a local college. Now, she's using internet, sends me more online cards than there are holidays I think! and we can communicate easily through email. She has been lonely, and lonelier - which is natural as her health declines and mobility decreases. I have a blog, but I NEVER even thought about her having one, until visiting yours. This could be a great thing for her loneliness! Do you have any advice on how to encourage someone elderly to not be afraid of the internet, of getting involved. Maybe you have a pointers file already or something? If not, thanks anyway, this is at least a great idea

Jessica - I've sent you a longer message by email. There is also a story here that will give you more information about elderblogging.

I just watched the first programme on Retirement living TV. What pleasure to see you and Millie again and to be able to put a face on Mort!
Thanks

I really like "Growing Bolder"! That's smart. And true!

Tres cool, Chika!

Now, what I think would be a great show would be YOU as the hostess/interviewer.

Awesome!!!! I thought this was absolutely wonderful. And all of you who participated were terrific. I don't want to be crabby -- then again, maybe I do --but the pretty lady who interviewed you, Ronni, seemed incongruous for a program geared toward elders.

Hi Ronni...Just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your interview for Retirement Living. It was so professional and informative. Very well done and hope all is well with you.

I too enjoyed the Elder Blogging episode on Retirement Living TV.

You, Ronni, and Millie and Mort and Susan did us proud. You are all such fine examples of elders although I am not sure if Susan falls in the elder category yet.

Ronni,I smiled to myself when the host who was questioning you seemed astounded that some Elder
Bloggers were born in the 1920's since I was born in 1929 myself.;)

Made me kind of proud of myself for being a blogger.

You did a great job of explaining what blogging is and especially Elder Blogging.

Hi Ronnie,
It was great seeing you again on RLTV.I enjoyed reading the blogs you suggested.I'm still waiting for your time on RLTV.Love,Vera

I just finished watching the clip on Elderblogging and I am so happy to tell you that I was able to hear and understand most of what was said. I felt like you were visiting in my living room, Ronni, and to see and hear you makes me admire you more and more. The show also made me want to check out Mort and Millie's blogs. My gardening is limited to a few bushes and potted plants now, so I will forgo Susan's blog.

Thanks for putting in the link to your segment! After watching it, I kept thinking that it wouldn't it be great if YOU were conducting the interviews on that programme. As lovely as she was, you had so much more gravitas than the interviewer could ever hope to have. Isn't there a movement somewhere campaigning to get less youth on the small screen? If not, I think I'll start one.

So not only are you an erudite blogger; you are a great interview! I very much enjoyed the program and it got me thinking about my blogging activities...I sort of fly by the seat of my pants and never really thought about the benefits or ramifications of blogging. Everyone on the show looked pretty young and dynamic. You all represented us so well.
