Summer in Portland, Maine
It's been a long time since I've posted photographs. Getting out, even on my deck has been difficult; it has rained - heavy, soaking rains - more days than not throughout spring and summer. I haven't lived here long enough to know for certain, but it appears now that fall has already arrived. The days are mostly cloudy, when it's not raining, and cool with temperatures in the low- to mid-60s.
I'm not complaining. I like cool, cloudy weather.
Last winter, the local media tells us, gave us one of the heaviest snowfalls on record, more than twice as much as average. I can attest to that, having lost track about midway through snow season of how many times I dug out my car. This was one of the last, big storms, probably in late March.

The deck is covered and doesn't get too much snow, but it looks rather desolate in winter and hard to recall that it flourishes during midyear.

They tell me here that you can't begin a garden until after 30 May; it might still freeze at night. When I was in New York in April, the tulips and daffodils were already in bloom in the sidewalk planters, but even in June, my deck garden looked sparse. (Note those lilacs on the other side of the fence.)

One morning in June, this appeared in the sky off my deck. What is it about rainbows that make us feel happy?

Remember the lilacs two photos up? The tree - it's much bigger than a bush - is in a neighbor's yard, but the branches overhang my deck, so I cut stole a few this year for the dining table. It is my favorite flower scent - it nearly makes me swoon.

Two months later, in early August, the deck garden has filled out, but I doubt the adjective "lush" can be applied in Maine where the growing season is so short.

Nevertheless, the fresh-green color of the sweet-potato vine cheers me on rainy days and I have always liked the simplicity of plain, white petunias.

They were given a whole new look one recent morning during a pink-hued dawn.

Speaking of pink, this photo almost does the color of this geranium justice, but not quite. In life it is even deeper and more sensuous.

Second only to lilacs, the aroma of hyssop sends me into reveries. This is the most successful group I've grown in Maine and the honeybees think so too. Except in the heaviest rain, they are there every day.

But the real reason for this post today is to celebrate the fourth birthday of my furry companion, Oliver. He has not been allowed on the deck due to this misadventure last year. Which undoubtedly accounts for his pensive mood. I think today, this afternoon, I'll allow him some time out even though it means a lot nagging from him for more.

[At The Elder Storytelling Place today, Clair Zargas explains how she learned the hard - and funny - way about being one of those with Tenderfeet.]

Happy Birthday Oliver. Looks like you have settled into your new home. Your deck garden looks great. Mine comes in second. My first cottage garden in the city. Wish I had some of your rain. I water every morning so my new plants and trees will survive.

Shangri-la comes to mind.....
An earthly paradise. Retirement or semi-retirement is a wonderful phase of life. The blooms, colors, hues, scents are so rich and amplified by our age and ability to appreciate. I aspire to work less.

Happy Purrday to Oliver from Caturday! Summer may not be over yet Ronni, remember last September? It was like an extra month of summer. We're been trying to get four good days for an outdoor video shoot and so far we've gotten one! But we might get the next two done next week.
However, this is the rainiest summer I have been through in 30 something years in NH and last year was the snowiest winter. hmmm.

Happy birthday, Ollie. Enjoy your deck outing.
I love your Hyssop. It is not a plant I am familiar with and I must remedy that.

Happy Birthday to you, handsome Oliver! Your mom is so lucky to have such easy access to blooming lilacs!

always enjoy your photos of the space around you. looks a bit "lush and exotic," an alerted view of maine.
best to oliver who definitely looks like a man in a cat suit in his photo...about to make his next pronouncement on the state of the world.

A post good for the heart.
Happy birthday beautiful Ollie.

Thanks for the colorful look into your world. With daily temps here in Santa Fe in the 90s it is hard to think that fall is on the way.
Good break from the constant serious tone of TGB. I must remember to lighten up sometimes myself.

I read the exciting story of Ollie's misadventure. It is no surprise he managed to get off the deck. Where there is a will there is a way. I could swear my cats can all fly.
You have a beautiful place. Hopefully Ollie will enjoy an outing on the deck and behave this year.

Happy Birthday,Ollie!
When I first looked at you sitting so regally in that chair I thought how lucky you were to have permission to sit there.
Then I came to my senses and realized that you are the boss and Ronni probably has to ask if SHE can sit there!

It feels like fall is starting up here also. It's still hot but the air just feels different and the birds are gathering in bigger flocks. When Lammas comes, Celtic harvest festival, with the first of August, things seem to change.

Happy Birthday to Ollie. My cats would sympathize. Before our landlords put in the fence that encloses our patio they almost never got out. Now they are insulted when we insist that they wait until Mom and I come back from our morning walk. Hope he has as long a life as my three (17, 17, and 12).

There once was a cat named Ollie
Who was four years old, by golly!
He longed for outside
To run, chase and hide
In another wild outdoor folly!

Gorgeous! And I much prefer the summer porch to the winter one.

Happy Birthday, Oliver!!!! Be good for Ronni on your outing -- it might even lead to more!
Your flowers and photos are breathtaking!!!! I especially liked the rainbow -- I wrote about rainbows a while back. I contend that rainbows are hope. An older than me lady I know call's rainbows "God's promise" and I liked that, too.

Happy Birthday Ollie! Have you ever considered a harness for Ollie? He probably is far too dignified for that.
I've always enjoyed your photos and posts about Portland. As a native Minnesotan, I've struggled for 26 years in the heat and swampy DC area and am always looking for cooler places to retire to.

Happy Birthday, Oliver! And I love the photos of the flowers! I could almost smell them. I felt a little wistful that fall is approaching and it seems like here in the northwest, fall just left.

Yes, even down here in Coastal Rhode Island I get a sense of the summer coming to an end...

Here in the sunny south, we are still in full-blast summer! No autumn hints until the last of September.
Fred First has a lovely post on hints of autumn in Virginia today:

Happy 4th, Oliver! You are so handsome!
Ronni - great garden photos. Wished I still had a sense of smell - I miss it when folks start describing things like hyssop and lilacs ;-)

I'm with you 100% on that swooning over the lilac scent!
Thanks for the photos!!

Happy birthday to Ollie! Lovely photos! What a contrast between winter and summer! None of this here.

I love it when you post pictures! If I had your deck, I'd spend as much time as possible on it. I really like your apartment and neighborhood.
Yes, it's still summer here in TN and will be until the end of September, as Mike said.
Do you still consider moving to Portland, OR?

Happy birthday Ollie!! I hope you were well behaved today so you just might stand a chance of getting out on that beautiful porch again.
Loved all the pictures, especially the white petunias.

Happy Birthday, Oliver. I hope you will find some way to allow Oliver to safely enjoy the fresh air during the glorious weather. There must be a way. Can you, perhaps, screen the porch?

Over here on the West Coast (morning fog in Sausalito) those gorgeous photos give me a sense of seasons, there.
Your place looks well-built, and thought-out (metaphorical likeness to you perhaps) with a lovely chair Your cat has character - even in stillness. Good season for reading, contemplation and writing

What a fine birthday boy you are, Oliver. My wish is a day belated but the cats here and I will have a cupcake in your honor.
Wonderful photos, a serene tour of your beautiful place. My favorite photo? (aside from Ollie's, of course) The pink glow on your white banisters and white flowers. Gorgeous. I love lilacs, too, but my first favorite scent is daphne!

I have been now just a month in London and begin to understand why the British speak so much about weather.
While in Paris or Budapest the weather (often bad of course) stays here it changes often through the day. Nor the bad weather, nor the good one with beautiful blue sky do not last longtime.
Nor the cold nor the warm, also lately is rather cool. Great pictures and text to, you made me feel near, there! Go out a bit from my quest of discovering a new setting and home after 74.

Maine has it all! At least that's what a beer mug I've had for twentysomething years claims. Premium T. and I will be on Friendship for a few days next month.

Enjoyed your piece (and photos) on Portland, which my wife and I visited during a stay in Kennebunkport last year. We have grown to love Maine, and were surprised at all the flowers there.
