Golfer's Lament

By Ellen Younkins

Spring is here
April fools, aren't we all.
Where is the spring
that we could once recall?

At the end of March
the birds were on the wing
and the frozen snow
just a distant thing.

The greens were green
the grass was high.
We were on the course
from noon to nigh.

Are we just too eager
to start out to play
hoping we'll be there
for at least one more day?
