Mandela

By Ross Middleton

A man schooled by fire
A man well bred
His family of some prominence
Educated in the Western way
But faithful to his people

Trapped
Incarcerated
He re-made himself
In a country where people would listen
To someone with the authority of a chief

Without customs
Without respect
Who listens?
Would a man from the slums have his cachet?
Would he find friends?

There can sometimes be justice
There can sometimes be balance

The time was right
The place right
A man able
Able to hold himself together
Could succeed

And he did
