A Poem – Again

I Am (Still) Julia Roberts

category_bug_journal2.gif ...and I am still in Portland, Maine, or on the train traveling back to New York City.

Today's rerun of an old post was originally inspired by my friend Richard Fouts who blogs at his corporate site, Comunicado. More than anyone else I know, Richard appreciates my humor - sometimes even when I don't recognize it. When I related this story to him one evening at dinner, he almost fell off his chair laughing. I hope you enjoy it too.

I've never been a big makeup user. I'm not pretty (average at best) but I never really gave a flip about other's opinions. I use a little "war paint" maybe 2 or 3 times a month. I think confidence and a big smile are the most attractive things a woman can wear.

Are there women out there, even pretty women by our culture's standard, who actually think they are physically pretty? I've never met one (even the ones others thought were pretty.) I never thought of myself as physically "pretty."

But I loved my red hair which I felt redeemed me somewhat. On the other hand, my upper two front teeth were separated, so I always smiled with my mouth closed, or tried to do so (forgot a lot of times with friends.)

Ended up with a full page head shot (8 1/2x11) which caught me with mouth open, laughing, in a school annual. What a shock the first time I saw it for I saw only the gap between my teeth. Oh well!

This day and age, could have had that cord causing the separation cut, I've been told. But why bother now, in the beginning of my 7th decade. Besides, a bout of teeth grinding in my sleep a few years ago has focused my attention on different more important dental issues.

Years later I've seen David Letterman with his gaped upper front teeth. Always wondered if he was as bothered about his teeth as I was about mine.

Then, there's that famous model who I recently learned has the gap taken out in her commercial photos. Just goes to show there is still discrimination against the gap-toothed people, or is it just the women?
