The Women's Vote

category_bug_politics.gif For the past couple of days, as at least half a dozen TGB readers have let me know (what would I do without you all?), this video, endorsed by 60's phenom, Lesley Gore, has been on fire around the web:

Right on!

Sing it, sisters!

A few days ago, during a long telephone conversation with an old friend, I went off the rails in a rant against certain male, right-wing politicians – you know, those freaks who, in the name of feverish religiosity, want to outlaw abortion, contraception and to forcibly shove things up women's vaginas.

As my rage built, I was aware, but only vaguely, that I was speaking with a rational man who loathes these ignorant louts as much as I do. But I couldn't stop myself. My wrath had taken control of my mouth.

When I finally wound down, there was silence on the telephone line. Silence from a man who never met a subject about which he has no opinion. He must have been stunned by my ferocity and I could feel the adrenaline still racing through my body. (Good thing I wasn't driving.)

According to the media, the female swing vote (whatever that is) for choice of president is in flux and the two campaigns are battling for it.

Really? There are women left in the United States who think it is a good idea to let men (and they are all men) delirious with the glory of their god (a deity who never said anything about abortion or contraception or poking unwanted things in women's vaginas) decide what they, women, can do with their bodies?

The latest troglodyte to take up cudgels against women's right to control our own bodies is one Richard Mourdock who is running for a U.S. Senate seat from the state of Indiana. Trying to separate himself from his two opponents who also oppose abortion, Mourdock said this at a debate Tuesday evening [emphasis added]:

"I've struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from god. And even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen."

Now how would anyone know what god intends? Someone has got to say this: these are crackpot crazy people. There was a time they raved on street corners. Now we elect them to Congress.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney recorded a political ad supporting Mourdock, an endorsement that is still airing in Indiana. Senator John McCain supported him too – until Mourdock appointed himself god's stand-in this week. As reported at TPM, McCain told CNN:

“'It depends on what he does. I think it depends on what he does,' McCain said. 'If he apologizes and says he misspoke and he was wrong and he asks the people to forgive him,' the Arizona Senator would get behind him again.”

Misspoke? Apologize? That's what you do when you accuse someone of something they didn't do. No one “misspeaks” about religious conviction and you can't apologize for a belief, particularly for one you “struggled with” for a long time.

[UPDATE: Since I wrote that, Mourdock issued this "apology" as quoted in The Atlantic:

"'If there was any interpretation other than what I intended, I really regret that,' Mourdock said in an midday press conference in the Hoosier State. He added: 'Anyone who goes to the video tape and views that understands fully what I meant.'"

That's horseshit and anyone who looks at the video knows it.

But that doesn't bother Senator McCain who now supports Mourdock again. A pox on both of them. Like I said, it's not possible to apologize for a religious belief.]

Although the shiny, brand-new, moderate Mitt Romney is trying to slip-slide his way to making voters believe he would not work to overturn Roe v. Wade, he has in the past stated unequivocally that he would support the law's repeal.

Romney's running mate, Paul Ryan, has said repeatedly in the past that rape and incest are not excuses for abortion. Lately he has been toeing Romney's new line of allowing abortion in those cases and the health of the mother. Anyone who believes either man's late-campaign conversion undoubtedly believes in the Easter bunny too.

Here is what our president, Barack Obama, told Tonight Show host Jay Leno on Wednesday night:

“I don’t know how these guys come up with these ideas. Let me make a very simple proposition. Rape is rape. It is a crime. And so these various distinctions about rape don’t make too much sense to me — don’t make any sense to me.

“The second thing this underscores, though, is this is exactly why you don’t want a bunch of politicians, mostly male, making decisions about women’s health care decisions.”

Right on!

Sing it, Mr. President!

I have plenty of beefs with President Obama but I believe that if he is not re-elected and particularly if Congress is aligned with a Republican White House, women will lose what we – our generation of elders – fought so hard to achieve in the 1960s.

Roe v. Wade is no less an achievement for women than suffrage was for our grandmothers. We cannot allow it to be overturned.

Let's listen to Lesley Gore's song again:

At The Elder Storytelling Place today, Nancy Leitz: Colorblind

Any "apology" that begins with the word "If" is not an apology in my book.

I have shared this post with my friends on FB and have RT. THX for your rant on the phone and here.

The neocons often say, "Let's go back to the good old days - the 50s"

How long will it be before women lose their 'priviledges' to smoke in public, have a driver's license, use a credit card, write personal checks, or vote?

Hope everyone does their homework today - then VOTES!!

thanks, Ronni. I hadn't seen this video. yes, it's hard to imagine we are still having to defend thos

Like you and many others, both women and men, are just as furious as most of us here
who stand with you Ronni!!!
Actually I AM ENRAGED!

I live in a community that has a majority of practicing christians...they constantly
practice prosetylizing (sp?)
Many are my friends as long as
they do not preach at me! Several are on my "Share List"
who receive good stuff from me via group e-mail. They will receive TGB today!!!
Let's keep hollering and stomping We MUST Prevail!

Some incidental regarding Mitt's divorce intervention:

My RAGE is due to the facts of
my experiences in my 81 years of life, so far....

At 10 yrs old, my grandfather
raped me...
From then on, men grabbed at
my body in many public places, even policemen!
I was raped again as an adult!

Unbeknownst to me, I married (second time} a pedophile who
married me for access to my then 3 yr old daughter... When
she was barely 14 yrs old, she
had his child! Roe vs Wade was passed 3 yrs later...

Please DO NOT VOTE AGAINST WOMEN...Vote to keep President
Obama and lovely Michelle and their children in our White House....

All affordable health care for women will be gone if Romney is elected.

All protection from domineering men will be gone if Romney is elected.

All legal protection that women have fought so hard for will be gone if Romney is elected.

Wage discrimination will be the law of the land again if Romney is elected.

Rape and incest will be pushed under the rug if Romney is elected.

Abortion will be repealed if Romney is elected.

Your family income will go down if Romney is elected.

PBS will be gone if Romney is elected.

What don't you conservative Republicans get?

Please use your feminine mind and vote every Republican out of office. We refuse to go back to those 'good old days' for men.

We're all talking about the predicted storm headed our way here in the NE. We cannot stop the storm, but can stop the Rom/Ry by getting out to vote the Obama/Biden ticket.

Great video! Planned Parenthood was where I went for contraception and basic women's health care when I was a young, married mom with no health insurance for several years. They were great!

As a high school Biology teacher, I invited reps from PP to come talk to my students - in a Catholic school and with the Principal's OK! - about sex and contraception. But times have changed and I no longer align myself with the Catholic Church of today with the exception of one parish in Seattle where I will always feel at home. I don't understand how any woman who has ever benefited from the services of Planned Parenthood or similar programs would choose to vote for Romney.

I recall a classmate who married out of high school & had 5 children in 6 years. With the 5th child she "requested" a tubal ligation & she & her husband had to "appear" before a medical board for "permission". I can remember how astonished I was, but she thought nothing of it. She did get their "blessing" & had the tubal. So like Darlene, I agree, that the good ole' days were not so good for women. Do women today not know about those days? Dee

Hear, hear! Ronni. I am wasting a lot of time checking and re checking polls for good news (deadlock broken toward Dems) knowing that they are confusing and useless, but still. . . I saw a cartoon on Facebook--a woman bashing herself in the face with the caption "Women who vote Republican." I think much of my own rage is directed at "low information" voters who put these loonies in positions of power. A republican victory is unthinkable!

Have sent this out to both my Facebook page and a whole lot of my long-time Elder and Younger friends !! What a hoot!

Thank you, Ronni, I sent the Leslie Gore video to every woman I know. I hope it goes viral.

Rage on, Ronni, rage on. I've been raging about this for so long that merely alluding to the subject jacks up my blood pressure.

Excellent rant, Ronni. Lifted the video for own impatient post in need of upbeat ending--women singing and dancing.

Fantastic. You may have heard of what has been happening in The Land of Oz with out Prime Minister's blistering and game changing speech against misogyny. As well, we have taken the shine off one of the most savage and vile conservative shock-jocks in Australia - and the Leader of the Opposition keeps putting his foot in his mouth re women! So it is great to see what the sisters are up to in the USA. Go for it. Use the social media to the hilt - it has been our most precious weapon in Oz. We have had marvellous leaders like Jane Caro on Twitter and Jenna Price on Facebook ... and tens of thousands of us right behind them. Sock it to 'em!

Do we see a woman's revolution in the making? Let's hope so.

Somebody has got to stop these troglodytes.

All affordable health care for women will be gone if Romney is elected.

Thanks for the post. I've been hanging out to read your comments on Mourdock.

Yay, Ronni, rant on! I absolutely, totally agree with you and the other "Elizabeth". Most women in our age range have had at least one experience with what is now commonly defined as rape, even if we managed to escape or fight it off. As I said in an earlier post, I'll never figure out how ANY woman in her right mind would even consider voting for today's Republicans.

Extreme religious conservatism is headed in only one direction: think TALIBAN!! I'm sure that our very own born-in-the-USA Far Right wingnuts would vociferously deny having anything in common with the Taliban. But guess what? They have much more in common than they (or we) would like to think. Give 'em a little power and the cloak of legitimacy, and women had better check out "Burqa" on and get ready to forfeit such hard-won rights as having credit in our own name, owning property and having a chance at a living-wage job. We didn't even have control over our own bodies before The Pill and Roe v. Wade.

Yes, it could get that bad and worse. These guys are drop-dead serious! They really, truly do want to turn back the clock to the "good old days" of the '50s when women (and minorities) "knew their place" and stayed there. Mourdock, Aiken et. al. slipped up and spewed their twisted opinions in public, but we'd better believe they aren't alone. Is this the life we want for our granddaughters? I don't think so! Please: tell all the women you know to VOTE and vote in their own best interest! We have a lot to fear from an American Taliban regime!

Yay, Leslie Gore!

Ronni, you go, girl. We all need to get fired up and VOTE.

If Romney/Ryan should win (Heaven forbid!), we must form a third political party for women only. Oh, we can let men join, but they cannot be in policy-forming positions. When we were protesting the VietNam war, we women did all the work and the guys made all the decisions and took all the credit. Now it's past time for us to band together and to revolt against sexist laws and policies. If Hillary doesn't want to run for President in 2016, let's nominate Elizabeth Warren and replace every Republican in Congress with a woman. I suppose we could call ourselves the "Femocrats." What do all y'all think?

ALWAYS loved that song. Love it even more now. :)

Oh, Elizabeth (Friday, 26 October 2012 at 08:26 AM), thank you for being so honest and fervent in sharing the awful things that happened to you. You're 19 years older than I, and much changed in the 1960's and 70's; but then again, much did not.

Here we are in 2012, and many people want to go backwards again. Everyone who has posted, we have to do this for the now and the future, for us and our kids/grandchildren. Only about a week to find out.

It seems impossible that this could go wrong because all I see are posts like these, everywhere. But I'm warned there are masses of lawn signs with Romney on them in small town neighbourhoods, and workers being coerced to vote Repug by their bosses. We have to keep up the fight for freedom, wherever we are (I'm in the UK and voted last week). Great posts, everyone!

I include you in that praise, of course, Ronni. Awesome column. I'm sharing it with my friends on Facebook, along with the rest of my political ranting. We're all going to be so glad when this is over - hopefully happy AND glad.

Say it like it is, women! When I read Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale" back in the mid-1980s, I thought it was science-fiction, but now I see it coming true, if the right-wing-nuts have their way.
I'm in South Korea, so I also voted early. We all have to stand up and do the right thing! Stop this insanity before it gets worse!
