JE SUIS CHARLIE
Let's take a moment at the start of this blog post today to honor the people who were slaughtered by terrorists in Paris this week. There have been many fine tributes to the brave souls of Charlie Hebdo, Jon Stewart among them:
"Comedy shouldn't be an act of courage."
I also like this from famed street artist, Banksy:
Je suis Charlie.
LE HOLIDAY FEAST
I thought we were done with clever Christmas videos but when Joan McMullen emailed this from the pet food company, FreshPet, I had to make an exception. I'm sure glad I wasn't assigned to be the animal wrangler on this project.
FIVE PEOPLE BORN IN THE 19TH CENTURY ARE STILL LIVING
A piece at Raw Story about the people born in the 19th century and still alive whose age has been verified caught my attention.
Misao Okawa and Gertrude Weaver were both born in 1898, the same year as M.C. Escher, George Gershwin, C.S. Lewis, and Golda Meir, Raw Story tells us. Three others, all women, were born in 1899.
You can read more at Raw Story and you can see a list of the 100 verified oldest people in the world at Wikimedia.
KANYE WEST INTRODUCES PAUL MCCARTNEY TO THE WORLD
Multi-talented rapper, entrepreneur, etc. Kanye West has collaborated with former Beatle Paul McCartnery to record West's song, Only One.
This caused some consternation among younger music fans and new-ish TGB reader, Paul Schatzkin who blogs at Cohesion Arts sent along this Twitter exchange he found:
There has been some suggestion that these are just trolls who perfectly well know who McCartney is. Whether or not, this cartoon someone published further down the same Twitter timeline gave me a laugh - I know a couple of guys like this.
KEVIN SPACEY AND OTHERS HONOR BILLY JOEL
Speaking of old-timey music, back on 19 November 2014, piano man Billy Joel was presented with the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from the U.S. Library of Congress.
A lot of celebrities, including Kevin Spacey and Tony Bennett, were on hand to help out Joel with Piano Man. Wish I'd been there.

GLAMOROUS SPA DAY FOR LITTLE GIRLS
I don't recall where I ran across this video of little girls being indoctrinated into the ways of American beauty rituals. I'm uncomfortable with it at their age. See what you think.
BECAUSE WHO IS PERFECT?
Here is something with a different take on looks and beauty. The Because Who Is Perfect? campaign was created to highlight the International Day of Persons with Disabilities and it certainly would get your attention if you were walking by the storefront on Bahnhofstrasse, Zurich's main downtown street.
You can read more in the Daily Mail.
IS CANCER DUE TO BAD LUCK?
The scientists involved in this research sound fairly certain. The Guardian reports:
”Two-thirds of adult cancers, say the researchers from the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center in the United States, are caused by random mutation in the tissue cells during the ordinary process of stem cell division. In the other third, our genetic inheritance and lifestyles are the main factors.
[…]
“The scientists say that bad luck plays a stronger role in some cancers than in others. In two-thirds of the cancers – 22 cancer types – random mutations in genes that drive cancer could explain why the disease occurred.
“The other nine cancers occurred more often than the random mutation rate would predict, suggesting that inherited genes or lifestyle factors were the main cause. They included lung cancer, where smoking is the major cause, and skin cancer, which can be triggered by sun exposure.”
Of course, all this is in the might/maybe stage of preliminary findings so who knows. But if it turns out to be so, it will confirm my long-held secret belief that life is nothing more than bad joke. You can read more here.
HOW TO STAY WARM IN WINTER
It has been a brutally cold weather week in much of the United States. This woman, all 18 seconds of her video, has the right idea.
A BABY PANDA THINKS A SNOWSTORM IS GREAT IDEA
Bao Bao, the youngest panda at the U.S. National Zoo was caught on camera this week playing in her first-ever snow storm along with mama Mei Xiang. That's all you need to know to enjoy this kind of cute:
There are more photos of Bao Bao and Mei Xiang in the snow here along with African lion cubs, a gray seal and a wolf.
Interesting Stuff is a weekly listing of short takes and links to web items that have caught my attention; some related to aging and some not, some useful and others just for fun.
You are all encouraged to submit items for inclusion. Just click “Contact” in the upper left corner of any Time Goes By page to send them. I'm sorry that I won't have time to acknowledge receipt and there is no guarantee of
publication. But when I do include them, you will be credited and I will link to your blog IF you include the name of the blog and its URL.
As usual a Sat. slamdunk from good friend, Ronni.:)I needed that cartoon today & it is hilarious. Perhaps, the "purple haze" could solve a lot of the madness in the world. Worth a try! The Mcartney/West piece was good for more than a chuckle. I agree that the tweets were probably "put-ons", but West should be so lucky to have a tad of Paul's talent. Sorry, "rap" doesn't do a thing for me & I'd love to hear from Darlene on that score. Have a great w/end, Ronni. Dee

In the "holiday feast", the look on the cat's face was priceless. Shows the difference between cats and dogs. Dogs will put up with any sort of nonsense. Cats??

Kudos to the woman on the street, who has no secrets, for knowing what she wants and sharing it with the public. May she thrive.
I think that much that is done to our youngsters is abhorrent - starting with the cutesy little blue or pink hat that is placed on babies in their cribs in the neo-natal units of hospitals. The indoctrination begins early! I likewise abhor the cutesy little headbands with bows (or other visual cues) put on small children so that people will readily discern the sex.
When people were grousing about the long hair on young men (in the 1960s/1970s, the complaint being that one could not tell the sexes apart), a science fiction writer wrote something to the effect of, "Unless you intend to sleep with someone, what difference should it make to you what sex they are?"

Quite a time you've given me! Thank you, Ronni. After seeing Kevin Spacey in the tribute to Billy Joel, I went straight to YouTube to watch more but then decided to watch the whole celebration of Paul Simon, the recipient of the first Gershwin Prize and had so much fun.
It was good to come back to TGB and down to earth with the "Because who is perfect" video. Your other commenters have said everything else I'd like to say. Thank you!

Fabulous post today, Ronni. As always, you brightened my day. But the little girls at the spa? Aarrggghhhh! No, please no!

In the matter of Je suis Charlie: I just got my usual dose of Mark Fiore, one of my favorite cartoonists, and strongly urge you all to look at his most recent contribution, namely "Je suis Charlie" :

Long live writers and poets and cartoonists!

This one had me laughing out loud and in tears! For the first time I forwarded one of your blog entries along to everyone I know... Thanks so much!

To think that cancer is just a matter of bad luck makes no sense. While we have no choice as to where we get our genes from, we do have a choice of how we live our lives.
A friend of mine, here at the ALF, passed away recently. He was two years younger than I. He died of lung cancer and cirrhosis of the liver. By his own admission, he led a life composed of smoking, drinking and drug taking. If luck was involved in his demise, he made it.

Unhappily, too many of the Purple Haze guys seem to have morphed into Duck Dynasty types -- bitter. Let's try not to become bitter.

Okay, Dee. Here's what I think of Rap. It isn't music and should never be categorized as such.
To me, it is just words to a beat. Without a melody it 'ain't"' music.
And the words are usually disgusting so it isn't even poetry to a beat.
I must admit my critique was formed from hearing just a few Rap performances because once I know it's rap I hit the mute button now.

The lady with the hat probably gave the best response to a lame question any reporter has ever asked.

"FIVE PEOPLE BORN IN THE 19TH CENTURY ARE STILL LIVING"
Talk about a show-stopping headline!

Je suis Charlie indeed. I liked everything but the kids being styled. Loved the folks with disabilities.

I identify with those women born in the 19th century, so much has changed. When I was born war was waged on foreign lands, fought by armies (mostly). Now war can be waged anywhere, any time by the alienated.
Another fabulous blog, thanks Ronni.

Billy Joel is "old-timey music"??? He's just a youngster (well, younger than me). Should that make us feel better or worse in the Purple Haze Retirement Home? Though I'm more of a Chuck Berry girl myself.

Hi Ronni
The artist behind the Je suis Charlie cartoon was actually Lucille Clerc http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/banksys-striking-illustrated-response-to-the-charlie-hebdo-attack-9964198.html
And here's an even more stunning one:

Re: Purple Haze
The juke box at our senior center is programmed with big band music. My friends and I are wondering when they'll make the switch to Peter Paul and Mary and The Stones.
Je suis Charlie.

Great post after a taxing week. I have 8 grand-girls and find the spa thing revolting. I'm happy mine are got the chance to just be kids. The pull to remake themselves starts soon enough no matter what we do. When I think of all the children in shelters and foster care I have a hard time not judging this as a waste of resources.
