A TGB EXTRA: John Oliver on the Democratic Convention

Usually, I post the video essays from John Oliver's remarkable HBO show, Last Week Tonight in the Saturday Interesting Stuff column.

But because news – particularly political news – moves at warp speed these days and Oliver's show airs late Sunday night, by the next Saturday, it is often ancient history.

That was true just this last Saturday when I posted his video about the Republican Convention when the Democratic Convention had ended only two days previously.

So in the interests of time, here is John Oliver's take on the Democratic National Convention that took place in Philadelphia last week. Don't miss it.

To readers who live in countries other than the U.S. who have emailed to ask that I make the Oliver videos available for them to see, I am sorry that I cannot make that happen. The entity (person, network, corporation, etc.) that posts video to their website or YouTube page or elsewhere licenses them for certain countries. I can't change that.

Actually, because HBO is a paid service, I'm surprised I'm still able to post the Oliver videos even for the U.S. and worry that the day will come when no one but HBO subscribers will be able to watch Oliver's show anywhere. That will be a big disappointment and a loss to everyone.

Don't worry about it the licensing. Plenty of people reupload from their own laptops. Those who really want to watch it eventually do. Also, HBO won't do that. Last Week Tonight is their official John Oliver Channel on YouTube. :)

John Oliver must feel comfort as he slips so readily into Jon Stewart's shoes and clicks his heels.

He's a sane gem we need for this election season.

Yes it is frustrating for those of us across the pond not to be able to click straight through to those John Oliver videos. But it is usually possible to find them anyway, thanks to other people uploading them to YouTube etc. I found this one straight away. Glad I didn't have to miss it.

What really thrills me is that there are already a lot of people who describe Oliver as "a national treasure."

Right on, Mr. Khan. Shame on you, Mr. Trump. Great ad material for Hillary.

"Self-serving half-truths from a self-serving half-man." Says it all.

I do love John Oliver, and that small ad at the end for a free trial of HBO's streaming service makes me agree that these clips may not be free for long.
